FAQs

What is a fixed rate savings account?

Fixed rate savings accounts let you earn interest at a rate that doesn’t change for the term of the product.

They’re great for lump sums that you won’t need to touch for a while. You may find they offer a better return than you’d get from a variable rate account. There may be restrictions or charges if you want to withdraw money before the fixed term ends.

Our fixed rate accounts might be for you if:

  • You're looking for a higher rate of interest
  • You don't need instant access to your savings
  • You have a lump sum to put away.

What happens at the end of the fixed term?

When your account matures at the end of the fixed term, you'll be able to decide what to do with your money. We'll get in touch and give you your options at least 14 days before your account matures.

When we get in touch, we'll give you a default option that your money will move to - unless you tell us to do something else. The length of term on the default option will either be shorter, the same or no more than six months longer than the duration of your original account.

If you want to re-invest your money in the default option, you don't need to do anything.

If you want to withdraw some or all of your money, close your account or re-invest your money into one of our other savings options, you just need to tell us.

  • If you're registered for Online Services, you can do this online. We'll email you so you know exactly how to do this.
  • If not, we'll send you a letter. This will include a Maturity Instruction form that you can send back to us to tell us what you'd like to do.

Can I take my money out early?

With a fixed rate account, we usually offer a better rate in exchange for locking your savings away. This means you can’t withdraw them before your fixed term ends.

We normally offer a ‘14-day cooling-off period’. After this, you won’t be able to take out your money (including any interest paid) or close the account before the fixed term ends.

Should I fix my savings?

If you’re looking for a guaranteed rate of interest, fixed rate accounts can give you that.

They’re a great option if:

  • You're looking for a higher rate of interest
  • You don't need instant access to your savings
  • You have a lump sum to put away.

Are fixed rate savings accounts safe?

Like our other savings accounts, our fixed rate savings accounts are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The FSCS will protect up to £120,000 of any eligible deposits you have with us.

If the amount you have saved goes over this limit, the extra amount is unlikely to be protected.

What are fixed rate accounts?

With a fixed rate account, you can store your savings away for a set amount of time. This is usually between one and five years. Once you secure your interest rate, it won't go down for the entire term, regardless of fluctuations in the market.
