TLC in the community, Lifetime financial literacyTLC in the community, Lifetime financial literacy

As a financial services provider, we passionately believe in improving the degree of financial literacy across the UK.

Financial Literacy is now part of the National Curriculum at every level. We aim to support Schools and Colleges by understanding their specific financial literacy support needs. The Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg) tailors an interactive session which our staff volunteers deliver to students. We will be working with 20 schools in the 2010-11 academic year to help them fill the gaps in Financial education.

Lyng Hall School, Coventry

We are working with teachers to deliver financial education workshops to pupils of our partner school, Lyng Hall. In conjunction with the Citizens Advice Bureau we have extended advice and support to parents too, including a "Making the Most of Your Money" programme.

"We've had tremendous support from the Coventry", said head-teacher Paul Green. "The personal finance educational programme, together with further support and information for parents, has helped make a real difference to the school and wider community."

Reading volunteers

Coventry staff volunteer their time to help local schoolchildren improve their reading skills. The reading volunteer programme is run by Excellence in Cities for primary school children who require extra help with their reading skills. Improving a child's reading age through regular one to one support helps foster the fundamental skills and confidence that they need to effectively manage their money when they're older.

We currently have 49 volunteers, each reading with a child on a weekly basis.

Career academies

Career Academies is a charity working in partnership with schools and colleges to provide 16 to 19 year olds opportunities to gain work experience and coaching from businesses.

We are currently working with:

  • Lyng Hall School in Coventry
  • Halesowen College
  • Bourneville College in Birmingham
  • Waseley Hills High School in Worcestershire
  • King Edwards College in Nuneaton

The career academy partnerships encompass four main areas of support which are Partners In Business Mentors, Internships, Visits & Seminars and Guru Lecturers.
