Our story, once upon a time
The Coventry has been protecting the interests of its members for well over 125 years – since 1884 to be precise.. The story started when Thomas Mason Daffern (who became the Society's first secretary) and a small group of local citizens decided to set up the Coventry Permanent Economic Building Society.
Getting bigger and bigger
Things went from strength to strength for Thomas and his associates, and by the beginning of the First World War the 'Economic', as it was then known, had become the largest building society in the area. Subsequent mergers in the 1970s and 80s significantly enhanced the assets of the Society and in 1983, following a merger with Coventry Provident Building Society, it became known as Coventry Building Society.
3rd largest in the UK
Today, following the merger with Stroud & Swindon Building Society on 1 September 2010, we now have over 1.5 million members and employ over 1,600 staff, more than 75% of which are directly involved in servicing the needs of our members, either in our branches or our award-winning call centre.
