Terms and conditions of use

Verified by Visa is a service that gives you added security when you make a purchase online.

By proceeding to register for Verified by Visa (and continuing to use it), you are indicating that you have read these terms and conditions and accepted them. For your own benefit and protection you should read them carefully before accepting them. If you do not understand any point please contact us for further information. When you use Verified by Visa, both these and your account conditions will apply.

We would advise you print a copy of these terms and conditions and retain the copy for your own records.

1. Definitions

'Verified by Visa' means the secure service that provides online authentication when you purchase goods or services from Verified by Visa registered retailers over the Internet.

'Account' means your Coventry Building Society Visa debit card account.

'Personal information' means the information you provide us with when registering to use Verified by Visa, allowing us to confirm you are the cardholder.

'Password' means the password you choose to identify yourself when using Verified by Visa.

'We', 'us', and 'our' mean Coventry Building Society.

'You', 'your', and 'yours' mean the person who has entered into this agreement with us.

2. About Verified by Visa

Verified by Visa is a way of enhancing security in online transactions by providing added protection against unauthorised use of your card. Once registered, you choose a password to use when you make purchases from participating online retailers. Then, when you use your card, you will be asked to enter characters from your password to verify your identity. This will be on a secure and confidential screen. When you correctly enter the required details, you will be confirmed as the authorised cardholder and your purchase will be completed. Without your password, the purchase cannot take place at participating online retailers. If the incorrect password is entered more than three times, you will not be able to proceed with the purchase. If you have forgotten your password you can create a new one by clicking on the 'Forgot your password' link.

3. Registration & password set-up

Before you can use Verified by Visa you must provide us with certain personal details (your personal Information) to identify you. The personal information you provide must be accurate and up-to-date. We will verify your personal information against information held by us and by an independent third party.

You will be asked to choose a password to keep your account secure online. You will not be able to register if the personal information you provide does not match the information we currently hold. If any of the personal information that you have provided to us changes you must notify us immediately so that we can update our records.

4. Security

You must keep your password secure and confidential at all times and must not disclose it to anyone else. In particular, you must never write down or record your password in any way that could be understood by anyone else or on any software that retains it automatically.

If you suspect that anyone else knows your password you must change it immediately. If you are not able to do this, you must notify us immediately by calling us on 0800 121 8899.

You must notify us immediately if you believe that any unauthorised transactions have been carried out using your password.

We can require you to change your password at any time. In particular, we may ask you to change it for administrative or security reasons.

5. Use of your information

Where the law allows, we may provide the police or any prosecuting authority any information obtained in connection with Verified by Visa in order to allow them to investigate any suspected use of your password.

We will only pass your personal information on to any party which assists us in providing the Verified by Visa service. We may transfer this information to a country that is outside the European Economic Area for the purposes of managing and administering Verified by Visa and we will ensure that the security of your information is maintained.

We will only use your personal information in accordance with our Privacy and cookies policy.

We will not disclose your personal information to any online retailer.

6. Changing the terms and conditions

We may change these terms by sending a written notice of the change to any address that you have given to us, or (if the change is to your advantage) by publishing them on the website.

We may make changes with immediate effect to update or improve our Verified by Visa service or to reflect any requirements imposed on us by any party which assists us in providing it.

We may make changes with immediate effect if required to do so by any law or other regulatory requirement affecting us.

We will normally give you 30 days' notice if the changes we make are to your disadvantage.

The Verified by Visa service may be amended or discontinued, temporarily or permanently, without notice where the amendment or discontinuation is required by Visa International Services Association who run the payment systems for the cards used with your accounts.

7. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your use of the Verified by Visa service immediately if we suspect that:

a) Somebody else is using or attempting to use your password;
b) Someone else knows your password;
c) Your password is being used illegally;
d) You have breached these terms or your account terms.

We may terminate your use with immediate effect if we are required to do so by any party which assists us in providing the Verified by Visa service, by any law or by any other requirement affecting us.

We may terminate your use of the Verified by Visa service in writing. We will normally provide you with 30 days' written notice; however, in exceptional circumstances we may end your access immediately and notify you as soon as possible.

8. Liability

The terms and conditions applicable to your debit card with us continue to apply whether or not you decide to participate in Verified by Visa.

You will be liable for all use of your password unless it is a result of fraud and you have not acted negligently, or due to our negligence or the negligence of any party which assists us in providing the Verified by Visa service.

We shall not be liable for any failures of the Verified by Visa service caused by any events that we cannot reasonably control, such as machines failing to work or industrial disputes.

9. Governing law

These conditions are governed by English law. Any disputes arising from these conditions will be dealt with by the English courts.
