History of the Coventry

The Coventry Permanent Economic Building Society was founded in 1884 by a small group of citizens, one of whom was Thomas Mason Daffern, who became the Society's first secretary.

By the beginning of the First World War, the Economic as it was known, had become the largest building society in the area.

Following a merger with the Coventry Provident in 1983, we became known as Coventry Building Society.

The Coventry has a long established and enviable reputation. With a strong heritage of service excellence and product ingenuity, combined with unwavering customer-facing principles, we are proud to be the 4th largest building society in the UK.

Our logo depicts Lady Godiva, who was the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia at the time the town of Coventry was founded in the 11th century. With her legendary horse ride through the markets of the town, in protest at high levels of taxation, Godiva sought to bring about a fairer deal for her citizens. At the Coventry we aim to achieve the same outcome for our members - a caring approach and a fairer deal.
