Caring for the environment, We're doing our bit
Reducing our environmental impact is the responsible thing to do - and it is good for members too.
Carbon reduction
Here are a few ways we're trying to reduce our CO2 emissions and prepare ourselves for the next phase of regulation for businesses under the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.
- We have a target of 5% reduction in electricity consumption for 2011.
- In 2009, we started to install 'smart' meters, which provide actual meter readings every half hour, helping us to understand how we consume energy and highlight where savings can be made.
- We also look for ways to save energy during any refurbishments and when we replace equipment. Recent upgrades to our computer servers and air conditioning systems have produced significant savings.
- The Carbon Trust have highlighted areas for improvement at head office, with simple things like installing movement sensors on lights and timers on vending machines, saving energy and expense.
- We have also switched to renewable 'green' energy for our Coventry head office sites.
Paper
All the paper we use, both in correspondence with customers and within our own operations is from either recycled or sustainable sources and all sites have paper recycling facilities.
Other materials
We currently recycle a range of other materials, including staff uniforms, aluminium plates used for litho print, toner cartridges and stationery pallets.
